Before I knew it, we were 10 days into October and I had forgotten all about my resolution to start writing monthly favourites posts on this blog. Better late than never, though, so here are some things I enjoyed in September.
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Robert Galbraith’s latest Cormoran Strike novel, Lethal White, and it did not disappoint. I listened to it on Audible (read by the wonderful Robert Glenister) as soon as it came out, and it was the first book in ages to grip me so much that I needed to listen to it on my lunch break!
I also listened to Mortal Engines and Predator’s Gold by Philip Reeve this month. I loved these novels as a teenager and have wanted to revisit them since the film trailer came out. They’re just as exciting as I remembered and I’m so glad they’re getting a film series.
Films and television
I haven’t binge-watched anything in ages, but I got through all ten episodes of Maniac in a couple of evenings this month. This show’s aesthetic pushes all of my buttons, with sets and costume design that take inspiration from all of my favourite sci-fi movies (think Alien, Bladerunner, and The Fifth Element).
Another Netflix offering I’m really enjoying is the fourth season of Better Call Saul. Bob Odenkirk is endlessly charming and I’ll never get bored of watching Kim being a total badass. Well worth a watch, even if you weren’t that into Breaking Bad.
This month, I’ve really focused on cultivating healthy habits that improve my wellbeing. I’m back to thrice-weekly yoga sessions (at Happy Yoga in Newcastle, which I can’t recommend highly enough) and feeling so much better for it.
I’ve also been trying to take a proper lunch break every day and get away from my desk for a while. My office is surrounded by wonderful art and architecture - like Newcastle Civic Centre and the Hatton art gallery - so I’ve been trying to take advantage of that. Fresh air and regular breaks from the computer screen are doing me wonders.
At the weekends, my partner and I have been enjoying the beautiful weather by wandering around Saltwell Park in Gateshead. I think it might be my favourite place on earth - I feel so lucky to have it at the end of our street!
As anticipated, I’ve been completely immersed in Yakuza Kiwami 2 this month. I don’t think I can heap much more praise onto this series, but I’ll briefly reiterate that it’s honestly, truly wonderful and will fill your heart with joy. Kiwami 2 is a brilliant continuation of the story, with all of the excitement and emotion (I’ve cried my eyes out at least twice whilst playing it) I’ve come to expect of the series. There will be a giant void in my life when I’ve finished playing it…
Without question, my favourite item of clothing this month has been my new mac from Uniqlo U. I’ve always considered outerwear to be Christophe Lemaire’s strongest area, and I’ve been waiting for Uniqlo U to come out with a coat that really fits my shape and style ever since he joined the company. This new mac is everything I ever dreamed of, at a fraction of the cost of a piece from Lemaire’s own collection. It’s practical and stylish and goes with everything in my closet. I adore it.
Short and sweet but there you have it! Onwards to October, which I’m very much looking forward to :)
